Gifted and Talented Program

Gifted Services is pleased to collaborate with the staff of Marshall County High School to provide opportunities for challenging, thought-provoking, and creative learning for our gifted high school population. Lessons/activities at the elementary and middle school levels are implemented to foster growth in critical thinking, creative thinking, and problem-solving to help prepare our gifted students for a challenging high school career. Areas of giftedness are General Intellectual, English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Creativity, Leadership, and Visual/Performing Arts (Visual Art, Music, Dance, and Drama). 

MCHS is on a block schedule with 90 minute classes. All gifted students are encouraged to participate in high-level classes depending on their schedules, area(s) of giftedness, and student choice of pathways. Advanced classes for the areas of giftedness include: 

  • AP English Classes

  • AP Math Classes

  • AP Science Classes

  • AP Social Studies Classes

  • AP Art Classes

  • AP Computer Science Classes

  • Dual Credit Courses: Racer Academy, Thoroughbred Program, West KY College Academy

  • Leadership Dynamics Class

  • Art (AP Drawing, AP 2-D Design, AP 3-D Design, Advanced Visual Art, Photography)

  • Drama (Intro, Acting, Directing)

  • Dance (Dance, Dance and Movement, Dance Team)

  • Music (Choir, Concert Choir, Various Instrumental, Band)

  • Subject Acceleration

  • Whole Grade Acceleration

We are pleased to offer the Leadership Dynamics class for students identified as gifted in leadership or exhibit potential in leadership. Students develop their leadership skills through self-analysis and self-evaluation and by participating in community service projects through MCHS and community outreach programs. The goal of the class is to build leadership experiences on classroom, school, district, community, state, national, and global levels. Various leadership opportunities from the past include: 

  • Volunteer as mentors for middle school and elementary school gifted learners through the Mentorship Program

  • Plan, organize, and execute projects at MCHS 

  • Volunteer at area nursing homes

  • Support Gifted Education in Kentucky by participating in Gifted Education Week in Frankfort

  • Pen-Pal Project for all 5th graders in the district to prepare them socially for 6th grade

  • Produce pod casts

  • Posting on social media

  • Produce videos 

  • Food drives

  • Create Community Game Nights in collaboration with Marshall County Library in Benton

  • Attend Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA) and Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA) through the Kentucky YMCA

  • Murray State University Annual Leadership Conference

  • Graves County High School Leadership Conference

  • Provide information for local radio station WCBL

  • Complete various tasks for the administration at MCHS

  • Assist Marshall Mission

  • Job shadowing

  • Promote tourism in Marshall County in collaboration with TEAM Kentucky Lake

  • Assist the Chamber of Commerce

  • International community service through We Schools

  • Facilitate the Marshall County Female Leadership Conference

  • Church leaders, business leaders, local and Supreme Court judges, and leaders in the school district visit as guest speakers to help guide our future leaders.
